There’s a Lion in my MacBook…

I just can’t help it. I’m a sucker for any new software, let alone a new updated Operating System (OS). I did an entry not long ago on the Mac OS X Lion, and I did mentioned that I would probably download the new OS. That promise would only last me a few days, as I downloaded the installation files from Mac App Store two days after the launch.

Actual screenshot from my OS installation

The whole process took about 3 hours (2 hours to download from Mac App Store and another hour to install on my MacBook). Without a fast internet connection, the download process will take much longer, as you have to download a single installation file with a size of 3.7Gb.

But unlike the installation on Windows (trust me, I’ve done Windows installations since 1994), Mac installation is straight forward and no interruption whatsoever in the middle of the whole process. This is done by installing the OS using default settings (you don’t have to tinker much in Mac) and very minimal tweaking from users.

I’m quite nervous about the whole process as this is the second time in my life I’m doing a Mac OS installation (the first is on my white MacBook which I sold to my niece). But like the Snow Leopard version, Lion is as easy as its predecessor.

The proof is in the pudding

When the MacBook booted up, I noticed that the OS is a bit slow and laggy. Opening an application is as slow as a netbook. Everything is not as fast a before, as the internet access is also a bit laggy.

Then I decided to check out the Mac forum. A lot of complaints from other users with regards to the slowness in Lion OS, and mostly from people who have old Macs. If you have the newer ones, Lion will optimises your OS experience by indexing your harddisk (best to leave your Mac on overnight). Or you can also do a disk scan and check for errors (Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility). You should verify your disk permissions, repair it if needed, do a disk scan and repair it if needed again. Then you’re good to go!

I’m happy with my Lion OS and my MacBook is blazing faster than I’m on Snow Leopard! It’s an US$30 well spent.
